What is Hinduism
Astrology Horoscope
Hinduism is like an ocean of sweet water. You can't drink the entire ocean. All you need to quench your thirst are a few handfuls of water. You can drink it from one shore or the other. Similarly, what you are doing now is drinking water from one shore called 'occasional worship' (Naimittika Puja). There is daily (Nitya), occasional (Naimittika) and desire-born (Kamya) worship. You are doing one, and that's good though not everything.

'Swami Vivekananda has said: "Religion is realization; not talk, nor doctrine, nor theories, however beautiful they may be. It is being and becoming, not hearing or acknowledge; it is the whole soul becoming into what it believes. That is religion." So religion means 'becoming', to become something. Vivekananda also says that the same coat will not suit all people. So also, the same type of religion will not suit all people. Therefore, they are numerous methods and way in Hinduism. Religion can't be regimentation: all human beings should sit, stand, and kneel at the same time. it's based on love.'

'The idea behind the worship of pictures, images etc. is this. In the Uttara Gita (3.7) there is a remarkable Sloka:

Agnir-devo dvijatinam,

Muninam hridi daivatam.

Pratima svalpa-buddhinam,

Sarvatra samadarsinam.

'Ancient sages performed sacrifices. Now also you can see Brahmins performing sacrifices. Fire is god to them. To those who meditate, god resides in their hearts. To the ordinary masses, the image is god. But what is the real truth? Sarvatra samadarsinam, god is present everywhere to the supremely realized soul.
