| What is Hinduism |
|
'The ideal or truth of Hinduism is that God is omnipresent. This simply means that he is everything. This is what the Vedas teach, and the Vedas are the fundamental scriptures of Hinduism. The Gita is the gist of Hinduism, the core of Vedic teachings. Swami Vivekananda has warned that by Vedas, no the books are meant. They are the collection of fundamental truths about god and the universe. It is like the law of gravity; it was there even before Newton discovered it. In the cosmic sense, Atman. By "becoming", I meant knowing the Atman. We are suffering and limited because we don't know this truth.
'If someone asks us to sit and meditate, we laugh and ask: 'Where is the time?' So, for beginners, something concrete is needed and so images, pictures etc. have come up. If god is omnipresent, why not in pictures and images? To the ordinary masses, religion means offering flowers, grass etc. but this in not wrong: lord Krishna has declared in the Gita(9:26) that he will accept whatever you give with love; even a drop of water will do. What's the sign of his accepting our little offerings? We grow in love and devotion; this is Bhakti Yoga. Slowly, we learn to see god within ourselves also. We begin to think of him and meditate on him in our hearts. This is higher state. This is raja Yoga.
'By constant meditation, we begin to see god not only ourselves but in others also. not only that in everything! This is jnana Yoga. We begin to serve others with the idea that they are god himself. This Karma Yoga. This sarvatra samadarsana is the supreme ideal of Hinduism. This is the state of liberation or Moksha. What is liberation? It is liberation from limitation; in Moksha, you become cosmic.
'So, the greatest ideal of Hinduism is to see god in everything and everywhere. What will we get by seeing god everywhere? God means satchidananda: being, knowledge and bliss absolute. To see him everywhere and in ourselves, means to experience being (non-annihilation), knowledge and bliss eternally. So Rajesh, your worship is all right. But instead of occasional worship, do it everyday, even if it is for only a few minutes with faith and devotion.
Rajesh said: 'We may do Puja every day, Swamiji. But will may business improve? Will god give me more money? Will god make my son more intelligent?' I told him frankly: 'So you want to do business with god also?' Rajesh replied: 'No, but god has to take care of use' I said: ' He will certainly do that if you totally depend on him.' Now Rajesh thought he had caught me back the neck: 'Ah! Where is he doing that?' he laughed aloud.
I had to tell hem frankly: 'have you really sought his help any time? When you cheat someone. Do you as god before doing that? When you tell a lie, do you ask god before doing that? Only when you reap the result of that cheating, you drag god in between and blame him.' He is silent. So I continued: 'You see, sir, there is something called karma, the result of actions. That is another vital truth of Hinduism. Sow a seed and the plant prouts. This is the eternal law. Hindus have discovered the truth of karma, which leads to rebirth. God will intervene , cut asunder the bondage and free you from the hold of karma only when you pray to him. Meditate on him, repeat his names, serve him in his creatures. |
